Emma's Birth Story

I typed up her story in Myspace after she was born but now I don't have it so I'm going to do it again before I have the twins and the two births blend together. I decided before I got pregnant with Emma that I wanted to have babies naturally. I do believe that women are designed to have babies and don't need to be assisted with drugs unless medically necessary. I also wanted to fully experience the birth and know when to push. We went to birthing classes for the Bradley Method which I loved. The classes were great and I felt very prepared to have a natural childbirth. The key to having a natural birth is to stay home as long as possible so that you are not in the hospital very long before it is time to push. This cuts down on the possible medical interventions that can occur. Unfortunately this is not what I was able to do.
Tuesday, October 14th started out normal. I went to work and had a doctor's appointment scheduled for that afternoon. I started to not feel good at school and ended up leaving early. We went to the doctor and I of course peed in the cup and they took my blood pressure. Well, my blood pressure was high and there were proteins in my urine. The nurse said that she had never seen the litmus thing turn that dark before. So, we see the doctor and he tells us to go straight to the hospital for labor and delivery and that I'll have to do some testing. We get to the hospital and they hook me up to a blood pressure cuff that keeps reading my pressure every 30 minutes or so. I'm still not really aware of how serious everything is at this point. One of the doctors comes in and I say something about going back to work and she says that I'm done working. I'm either going to have the baby very soon or I'll be on strict bedrest for the rest of the time. I then called my department head and told her the news which she took pretty well even though I had done nothing to prepare for maternity leave because I thought that I still had time to do it. I spent the night in the hospital hooked up to the blood pressure machine which was torture. They decided in the morning that they were going to do a 24 hour urine analysis and I had to stay in the hospital for it. That day went by fairly normal. The nurses came in every so often and took my blood pressure instead of a machine which was soooo much better. The following morning, Thursday, they analyzed my urine and my protein level was still high. The doctor came in and talked to me and Jay. He said that the level was on the borderline for being induced or being on bedrest. He decided to go ahead and induce me that day and I was not allowed to eat any solids. I waited all day on a bed to open up in delivery which sucked because I was starving. I was finally taken to a L&D room and hooked up to pitocin at 6:00 pm on Thursday. I told the nurses that I did not want an epidural. I was already 2 cm dilated and contracting on my own when they hooked me up so my body was already in the process of getting rid of the baby. I thought that since my body was already working, that things would go fairly quickly and smoothly. They put two monitors on my belly to track my heartbeat and Emma's heartbeat. This made it impossible to get into a comfortable position to deal with my contractions in. I would contract and move and then the nurse would have to come in and readjust the monitors because they had moved off of the heartbeats. During labor a threw up a few times and was not really having an enjoyable time. My water broke at about 4:00 am and my mucus plug came out at the same time. The nurse came and checked my progress around 7 and I was only 5 cm dilated. At that point, I became completely discouraged and emotional. She asked if I wanted an epidural and I said yes. They came in around 8:00 and did it and was crying the whole time and hated it. They put a catheter in at the same time which I was actually happy about because I was tired of using the bedpan. I was able to rest at that point and of course the contractions were easier to deal with. Around 9, I felt the urge to push. I told the nurse and she thought that I was crazy since I had only been 5 cm dilated not long before. I told her no, I'm ready. She checked me and sure enough I was fully dilated. She called the doctor and got the bed ready for me to push. My Mom and Jay were there and Dad and Sandy were on the way. The nurse told me to do a couple of practice pushes and told me how. They said that I needed to have an oxygen mask in between pushes. I'm not sure why. If there was something wrong with my levels or heartbeat they never actually told me. That's probably a good thing because if I had known then I would have freaked out. After a couple of pushes the nurse realized that I was very good at it and told me to stop to wait for the doctor. That sucked to not push when I had the urge. I didn't have to wait long though. Sandy came in at some point and she was by my head giving me the oxygen while Jay and Mom were holding my legs. I only pushed 4 or 5 times once the doctor was there and Emma was out. They held her up and I saw her, and Jay cut the chord. She was then taken across the room to get checked out while I was being stitched up. I had a 2nd degree tear. They brought her back and I finally got to hold her. It was amazing. We were so lucky that she was in such good health even though she was early. She got to stay in the room with us the whole time we were in the hospital and it was a good experience overall.

My Fears

So, there are a lot of things that I'm worried or scared about with having these twins. Maybe it will make me feel better to put them all down.
1. Having 2 preemies
2. Having a c-section
3. The babies not sleeping at the same time
4. Emma getting jealous and acting out
5. My mom moving in with us. Jay wants her to move in with us for a year so that I can go back to work in August and we won't have to pay for 3 kids in daycare.
6. Not loving the twins as much as I love Emma
7. Going on bedrest
8. Becoming huge and beyond uncomfortable.
I can't think of any others at the moment but I'm sure there will be more as time goes on.
I am starting to get excited about the babies coming. This pregnancy has been a million times better so far than Emma's was. I can't wait to find out what they are and start calling them by their names! I've started feeling them and it's been amazing. I had forgotten what it felt like when Emma moved in me.

TWINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so insane. I knew there was a chance. There are twins on both my Mom's and my Dad's side. I was still in complete shock when I saw the two sacs and the sonogram tech side there were 2. I seriously started hyperventilating right there. I have calmed down since then and I have started to get a tiny bit excited. That is, until I think of some other minor problem like which one will get to wear the baptism dress made from my wedding dress or how long can they share rooms and things like that. I'm sure that everything will work out but it's hard to see that right now. I just think about two newborns crying and I'm scared that I won't have enough time to spend with Emma. I'm very glad that she got to spend so much time as an only child before she has to compete with two others. I know that she'll be a great big sister. I'm still not feeling too bad, especially for twins. I haven't gotten sick yet but I think that I've come close a few times. I am bigger already, although I know it's just bloating. I can only imagine how huge I'll become by the end.

The nausea has started

Well, I haven't actually thrown up yet but I've started feeling weird when I'm hungry, while I'm eating, and right after I'm done eating. Hopefully it will stay at this queasy stage but probably not. The nice thing is that I'm home so I'm able to lay down after I eat most of the time.

not a secret anymore!!

Well, Emma let the cat out of the bag last night at Dad's house. She hugged and kissed the baby and said so loud enough for Dad to hear. He then questioned it and I wasn't able to just straight lie to him. So now Dad, Sandy, MawMaw, and PawPaw know. Greg and Luke weren't there when it happened. Stephen was there but he's in denial and wouldn't let me tell him. My Mom is coming here this weekend for my birthday and I'm sure Emma will do the same thing and tell her. It's sweet though. She's been hugging and kissing the baby a lot. Last night she also tickled the baby for the first time which was cute. I think she's going to be a great big sister. I'm feeling great. I didn't have any symptoms yesterday besides peeing all day. I know that it's still early though.

I'm pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!

After a year, and losts of emo blog posts. I'm very excited to say that I am pregnant. Of course, I've already told the only person who actually reads this so I'm not sure who I'm announcing this to. Jay doesn't want to tell anybody else until I go to the doctor. I don't know how I'm going to keep it in. It will be especially hard in the coming weeks because I'll be seeing friends and family at 3 different birthday parties. I'm very, very happy though.

Growing up too fast!!

I had a near meltdown at Toys R Us today. Jay and I decided that we were going to buy Emma a trike for her birthday. I got an email yesterday from Toys R Us saying that they had their Radio Flyer trikes on sale for 25% off. The girl one was soooo cute with a pink seat and a basket in front with holes that you could put a stuffed animal in. It is only on sale today and tomorrow so Emma and I went today with Luke so I could secretly buy it and sneak it into the van. I took her to the bike section and had her get on the trike so that I could make sure that she could ride it. She got on and I realized that she was too big. We then tried a small bike with training wheels and that one fit great. I became so upset that she was too big and had missed the trike stage. I started crying and Luke said that it was okay. If Luke hadn't been there I probably would have started sobbing uncontrollably but I felt like I had to get it together since he was there. I did get the bike which was Disney Princess and was also on sale today which was nice. I know that she will love it and I can't wait to give it to her in 2 months.

wow

So, I posted a message on a message board which I haven't done forever. It was about TTC a second baby and it asked other mom's if they have thought about putting a deadline on TTC to keep their kids close in age. I've had 2 comment and one of them has been trying for 23 cycles and another one has been trying for 3 years. I can not imagine doing either of those. I really feel like I need to have some kind of stopping point to save my sanity. I would probably try forever for a first child. I really don't think that I can do that for a second one. That's way too much heartache to endure when you already have one child. I think that for me, it'll be best to give up at some point a shift my thinking to having an only child instead of two.

And now it's cycle 10

So, 3 negative pregnancy tests later I have started my period and started cycle 10. I'm going to buy a new basal body thermometer and start temping again. This is to prepare for the very real possibility that I will have to have fertility appointments once I reach that one year mark. It is probably for the best that I have not gotten pregnant this cycle. I've been taking several medications the past couple of weeks to help with poison ivy. I haven't gotten upset the past couple of cycles. I've started to accept it as fact and move on. It seems that every week I find out a new person is pregnant. I try very hard to not be a bitter bitch. This whole journey of
TTC a second child has been exhausting both physically and emotionally. It has also made me feel lonely and isolated. Jay has been supportive but I know that he doesn't get upset when my period comes and that he is totally fine with Emma being an only child. He doesn't understand my need to have a second one. I think that he feels like Emma isn't enough for me which isn't true. She's my dream come true and I would be lost without her. I just know that if she's the only one then I won't be able to stop myself from falling into all of the traps of parents with only children. She'll be very spoiled and she'll have all of my focus and attention. While this is preferred when they're younger, this is not good as they get older. Children need space, privacy, and secrets. They don't need the pressure that will be on her if she's the only one. I know that we can't afford adoption unless we were able to do it without an agency. I am open to this option but I'm not sure if Jay is. I've thought about foster children but there's no guarantee about what age we would get and a troubled teenager is not what Emma needs for a sibling. I don't know at what point we'll stop TTC. I've thought about not trying after the end of this year. I'm just not sure if there would be a point to Emma having a sibling if they would be 4 or more years apart. I want them to be companions, not just two only children. I don't know what we're going to end up doing. I just really hope that it happens naturally before I hit the year mark.

6th month failing

It's not a guarantee but a very strong likelihood. I've been put on steroids to drain my ear and it's not something that they give women in the 1st trimester so if I did happen to conceive last week the drugs would probably end the pregnancy. This sucks soooooo much. I was feeling pretty good about our chances. I didn't chart this month and have felt much more relaxed and I thought that we had decent timing without knowing exactly. This coming from nowhere is crazy. I'm so tired of trying. It's gotten to where baby commercials make me cry. I can't watch a tv show or movie where somebody has a baby. I'm cohosting a baby shower this weekend and then going to another one the following weekend. Both of them got pregnant before I started trying and I'm very happy for them. I really hope that I don't get emotional at the parties or afterwards. I don't want another baby shower for the 2nd baby so hopefully that will help but I know that seeing all of the baby clothes will be hard.

I have fallen in love...

with ovulation predictors. They are helping me be much less stressed than I would normally be. I would usually be forcing me and Jay to have sex at least once a day right now even if we weren't in the mood. Since I am getting negative tests I can relax and not put pressure on. That'll be different once I get the positive but it'll be for a shorter time frame.
